What Delaware has already done

Most road-safety advice is addressed to the driver. This page is the other half: the changes the state has made to the roads themselves. All of it is published by the Delaware DMV.

At intersections

• Roundabouts. Delaware reports 11 open to traffic on state-maintained roadways outside subdivisions, and cites statistics showing roundabouts reduce fatal crashes by 70–90%.
• Bigger, overhead signs where possible, particularly at critical signalised intersections.
• Larger STOP, YIELD and ONE-WAY signs, now significantly increased in size as part of all DelDOT projects.
• LED signal heads. 99% of red and green incandescent signal indications have been replaced with LED modules, which are brighter and easier to see.

For people on foot

• Countdown pedestrian signals installed at over 100 intersections statewide, and included in all new and retrofit signal designs.
• Longer crossing times. The pedestrian clearance interval has been increased to meet or exceed Americans with Disabilities Act standards.
• Audible pedestrian signals installed by request, as funding allows.

At the DMV counter

• ADA parking placards for drivers 85 and older — Delaware allows all senior drivers aged 85+ to obtain one.
